Dear Friends:

My Special Item this week is the column just published by the
Anglican Journal recognizing progress that has been made in
Canada since Archbishop Michael Peers issued an apology to
Canada's Indigenous people 25 years ago. I remember that
act very clearly, and am grateful to live to see "change for the
better." May it continue!

Other aspects of this letter include global issues, since
Colleagues List is, indeed "Global and ecumenical in scope,
while Canadian in perspective."

Blessings,

Wayne

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

From Sojourners and the Bruderhof Online:

Just as one moment can bring despair, it can also
lead to a powerful new beginning. A different life.
A dream for moving onward and upward rather
than backward.

- Diane Guerrero

--

The older I get, the more I'm conscious of ways
very small things can make a change in the world.
Tiny little things, but the world is made up of tiny
matters, isn't it?

- Sandra Cisneros

--

Sometimes the very walls of our churches separate us
from God and each other. In our various naves and
sanctuaries we are safely separated from those outside,
from other denominations, other religions, separated from
the poor, the ugly, the dying.…The house of God is not
a safe place. It is a cross where time and eternity meet,
and where we are – or should be – challenged to live
more vulnerably, more interdependently.

- Madeleine L’Engle

--

To love God is the only happy love, but on the other
hand it is also something terrible. Face to face with
God we are without standards and without comparisons;
we cannot compare ourselves with God, for here we
become nothing, and directly before God, in the presence
of God, we dare not compare ourselves with others.

Therefore in every person there is a prudent fear of
having anything to do with God, because by becoming
involved with God we become nothing.

- Søren Kierkegaard

--

When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our
lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those
who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have
chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds
with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be
silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who
can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement,
who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing
and face with us the reality of our powerlessness,
that is a friend who cares.

- Henri J. M. Nouwen

--

Only by humility can we be redeemers and
collaborators in the true collaboration that the
world needs. Liberation that cries out against
others is not true liberation.

No liberation brings true freedom if it causes hateful,
violent revolutions that destroy the lives and the dignity
of people. True freedom is that which does violence to
itself just as Christ, almost disregarding his sovereign
power, becomes a slave in order to serve others.

These are the true liberators that this tremendous hour
demands of our country, liberators with humble hearts
in which Christian love shines bright.

- Oscar Romero

CLOSING THOUGHT - Ursula K. Le Guin

Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to
be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.
