Dear  Friends:

Welcome to my latest edition of Colleagues List.
I hope you will enjoy my special item on how we
celebrated Christmas Eve in Northern Canada and
experienced the life of an intentional mainline
Protestant ecumenical congregation. I see it as
a model for many other locations across Canada.

Of course, you will find other global, ecumenical and
inter-faith articles and reflections here, so please keep
reading.

At the end of this mailing, you will find a new outline
of our Adult Spiritual Development (ACTS  Ministry)
program at the church I serve, St. David's United,
in Calgary.

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Provided by Sojourners and the Bruderhof

We must accept finite disappointment,
but never lose infinite hope.

- Martin Luther King Jr

--.

You can have the other word - chance, luck,
coincidence, serendipity. I'll take grace.

I don't know what it is exactly, but I'll take it.

- Mary Oliver

--

I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their
hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once
hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.

- James Baldwin

--

If humans are to fully attain their destinies, so far
as earthly development permits this – if they are
to become truly whole, unbroken units – they must
feel and know themselves to be one, not only with
God and humanity, but also with nature.

- Friedrich Fröbel

--

At first sight, the situation of this world suggests despair.
For Christians, however, the last word is always hope.
Despite everything, we have no use for a misleading or
alienating hope that looks only to eternal life – as though
eternity didn’t start here and now, because it is here and
now that we build an eternal life.

- Dom Helder Camara

-

The human hand – this bundle of bones, flesh, and
nerves – think of all it can do. It can bless or curse.
It can draw blood or bind a wound. It is gentle, agitated,
vicious; supplicating, ardent, tender. It can weld an iron
bridge or caress a child’s head. It possesses the power
to both harm and heal.

- Karl Joseph Friedrich

--

I believe that standing up for the truth of God is the
greatest thing in the world. This is the end of life.
The end of life is not to be happy. The end of life
is not to achieve pleasure and avoid pain.

The end of life is to do the will of God, come what may.

- Martin Luther King Jr.

--

Preserving a gentle spirit in a heartless world takes
extraordinary courage, determination, and resilience.
Do not underestimate the power of gentleness
because gentleness is strength wrapped in peace,
and therein lies the power to change the world.

- L.R. Knost

--

To be grateful for the good things that happen in our
lives is easy, but to be grateful for all of our lives –
the good as well as the bad, the moments of joy as
well as the moments of sorrow, the successes as well
as the failures, the rewards as well as the rejections –
that requires hard spiritual work. Still, we are only truly
grateful people when we can say thank you to all that
has brought us to the present moment.…Let us not
be afraid to look at everything that has brought us to
where we are now and trust that we will soon see in
it the guiding hand of a loving God.

- Henri J. M. Nouwen

*****

CLOSING THOUGHT - Austin Channing Brown

Anger is not inherently destructive.
My anger can be a force for good.

My anger can be creative and imaginative,
seeing a better world that doesn’t yet exist.
It can fuel a righteous movement toward
justice and freedom.

SPECIAL ITEM

... AT THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR

Colleagues List continues to evolve, but some things remain the same.  I try to provide a Canadian, progressive Christian perspective through the material I send and am always looking for thoughtful reflections and news items emerging from a wide spectrum of religious and spiritual sources.

Book notices, my columns written for other periodicals, seasonal meditations, news items - all give background to my personal view-point from a wide range of denominational and faith perspectives. I hope to encourage dialogue and clarification of issues, not uniform understandings.

I am always grateful when readers share their own links to books, articles and other communications.

This blog is entering its fifteenth year using various formats - which I hope continue to improve in readability. I begin each issue with an enthusiasm that is hopefully contagious.

Welcome to 2019!!

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Provided by Sojourners or the Bruderhof online:

Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.

- Zora Neale Hurston

--

Forgiveness is the name of love practiced among
people who love poorly.

- Henri J.M. Nouwen

--

Newness happens in the world when long silenced
people get their voice enough to sing dangerous
alternatives.

- Walter Brueggemann

--

Seeds move through their life stages in an endless
cycle of seasons — and the cycle of seasons
reminds us that the journey never ends.

- Parker Palmer

--

Love is what carries you, for it is always there,
even in the dark, or most in the dark, but
shining out at times like gold stitches in a
piece of embroidery.

- Wendell Berry

--

There is no separation, no conflict, no obstruction
between the world and the Divine. All that exists is
penetrated with divinity. Creation, matter, our bodies -
everything is a vast incarnation or manifestation of
Real Presence.

- Sue Monk Kidd

--

Often people think they are lost. They think that
nothing in the world can help them. And then God
looks and says, “It is time.” And all at once everything
looks different.

Everything comes into a different light, and all at once
you see that all is not lost, but won. Remember this,
all is not lost in his eyes. “The lowly shall be lifted up,
the first shall be last.”

- Ger Koopman

--

We are all going to die, and I suppose whether it is
sooner or later makes little difference in eternity, for
eternity is total is-ness, immediacy, now-ness. Living
in eternity is, in fact, the way we are supposed to live
all the time, right now, in the immediate moment, not
hanging on to the past, not projecting into the future.
The past is the rock that is under our feet, that enables
us to push off from it and move into the future. But we
don’t go bury ourselves in the past, nor should we
worry too much about the future.

- Madeleine L’Engle

--

What does a person need – really need? A few
pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six
feet to lie down in – and some form of working
activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment.
That’s all – in the material sense. And we know it.
But we are brainwashed by our economic system
until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of
time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry,
playthings that divert our attention from the sheer
idiocy of the charade. The years thunder by. The
dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked
in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we
know it, the tomb is sealed. Where, then, lies the
answer? In choice. Which shall it be bankruptcy
of purse or bankruptcy of life?

- Sterling Hayden

--

Although the scribes could explain where the
Messiah should be born, they remained quite
unperturbed in Jerusalem. They did not
accompany the Wise Men to seek him.

Similarly we may be able to explain every
article of our faith, yet remain spiritually
motionless. The power that moved heaven
and earth leaves us completely unmoved.

What a contrast! The three kings had only
a rumor to go by. But it spurred them to set
out on a long, hard journey. The scribes,
meanwhile, were much better informed, much
better versed. They had sat and studied the
scriptures for years, like so many dons. But
it didn’t make any difference. Who had the
more truth? Those who followed a rumor,
or those who remained sitting, satisfied with
all their knowledge?

- Søren Kierkegaard

*****

CLOSING THOUGHT - T. S. Eliot

You will never attract the young by making
Christianity easy; but a good many can be
attracted by finding it difficult: difficult both to
the disorderly mind and to the unruly passions.
