Dear Friends:

In two weeks, it will be two years that Donald Trump
was elected president of the United States of America.

Since that time, much editorial and journalistic "ink" has

been spilt globally on what that fateful election meant -
not just for America, but for the world.

In this issue of Colleagues List I include a column I wrote
in November of 2016 entitled "What is Truth?" and I include
it in this issue as my Special Item this week.

I also include a worthwhile piece by Jim Wallace of
Sojourners, a progressive American evangelical magazine.
Wallace and I seem to agree on many things concerning
the Trump phenomenon.

Of course, there are other good items in this issue, and
I invite you to take a look.

Wayne

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Provided by Sojourners and the Bruderhof online:

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the wingéd life destroy.
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity’s sunrise.

- William Blake

--

You must never be fearful about what you are doing
when it is right.

- Rosa Parks

--

One of the marvelous things about community is that it
enables us to welcome and help people in a way we
couldn’t as individuals. When we pool our strength and
share the work and responsibility, we can welcome many
people, even those in deep distress.

- Jean Vanier

--

Christians don't simply learn or study or use Scripture;
we assimilate it, take it into our lives in such a way that
it gets metabolized into acts of love, cups of cold water,
missions into all the world, healing and evangelism and
justice in Jesus' name, hands raised in adoration of the
Father, feet washed in company with the Son.

- Eugene H. Peterson

--

The best way to show your gratitude to God and people
is to accept everything with joy.…We may not be able to
give much but we can always give the joy that springs
from a heart that is in love with God. All over the world
people are hungry and thirsty for God’s love. We meet
that hunger by spreading joy. Joy is one of the best
safeguards against temptation.

- Mother Teresa

Try walking around with a child who’s going, “Wow,
wow! Look at that dirty dog! Look at that burned-down
house! Look at that red sky!” And the child points and
you look, and you see, and you start going, “Wow!
Look at that huge crazy hedge! Look at that teeny little
baby! Look at the scary dark cloud!” I think this is how
we are supposed to be in the world – present and in awe.

- Anne Lamott

--

When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that part
of you that knows that life is far more than anything
you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part
of you that allows you to stand for those things
without which humankind cannot survive. Love
that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant
over war, and justice that proves more powerful
than greed.

- Fred Rogers

--

To help one another is not considered a task, but the
self-evident reality on which companionship is based.
To help is not a virtue, but a pulse of existence.…
Help, not out of pity – that is, from a sharp, quick pain
which one wishes to expel – but out of love, which
means to live with others. He who only pities receives
from the mere outward manifestation of the sorrow of
others a sharp, quick pain, totally unlike the real sorrow
of the sufferer

MOMENT IN TIME

Baby Fae receives a baboon heart
(Duane R. Miller/Associated Press)

Oct. 26, 1984: In 1984, Dr. Leonard Bailey put a young baboon
heart into a 14-day-old girl – the first xenotransplantation, or
cross-species transplant, performed on a human infant.

Stephanie Fae Beauclair, known to the world as “Baby Fae,”
was born three weeks premature with a fatal heart defect.
Her operation, which took place at the Loma Linda University
Medical Center in California, was deemed successful. And as
her condition stabilized over the first few days, some doctors
predicted the procedure could soon become commonplace.
But by Nov. 9, the child began showing signs of rejecting the
heart. On Nov. 15, nearly 21 days postsurgery, Baby Fae died
when her kidneys failed. Baby Fae’s case was not the last
attempt at xenotransplantation. In 1992, for example, a
35-year-old man survived 71 days after receiving a baboon
liver. (He also received an unexpected virus from the animal,
raising concerns about risk of diseases from other species.)

But the idea of using animal organs as a long-term solution to
addressing the need for human donors has yet to become reality.
