WISDOM OF THE WEEK

From Sojourners and the Bruderhof online:

One who has loved is never quite alone,
though all the hills declare our solitude.

Having known you, I am no more afraid,
the essential singleness of blood and bone

when dispossessed, comes never in return;
one who has loved is never quite alone.

- Jane Tyson Clement

--

There's really no such thing as the 'voiceless'. There are
only the deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard.

- Arundhati Roy

--

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is
nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people
won't feel insecure around you.

- Marianne Williamson

--

I have come to understand and listen to the fear. I walk
towards it and I lean into it to find new information  --
and the things it has to teach me.

- Tracee Ellis Ross

--

Each and every one of us is born with a clean heart.
Our babies know nothing about hate or racism. But soon
they begin to learn — and only from us. We keep racism
alive. We pass it on to our children. ...  We owe it to our
children to help them keep their clean start.

- Ruby Bridges

--

If we owned anything, we should have to have weapons
to protect ourselves. That is what gives rise to contentions
and lawsuits, and so often causes the love of God and
neighbor to be interfered with. For ourselves, we are
resolved to possess nothing temporal in this world.

- St. Francis of Assisi

--

We can only live the changes we wish to see; we cannot
think our way to humanity. Every one of us, and every group
with which we live and work, must become the model of the
era which we desire to create.…All of us are crippled – some
physically, some mentally, some emotionally. We must
therefore strive cooperatively to create the new world. There
is no time left for destruction, for hatred, and for anger. We
must build – in hope, and in joy, and in celebration.

 - Ivan Illich

--

We all must decide in our own consciences what side we
will take. God our Lord is offering us marvelous fruits if we
let him sow in us that sprout which will produce prolific
branches, the fruits of eternal life. This is God’s plan, and
that’s why the church is the vineyard where God’s kingdom
will always be in crisis. Blessed are those who feel the crisis
deeply and resolve it by committing themselves to our Lord.
I am very glad that precisely in this hour of crisis many who
were asleep have woken up and are at least asking where
the truth is to be found. Look for it! Saint Paul shows us the
way: it is found with prayer, reflection, and esteem for what
is good. These are wonderful criteria. Wherever there is
something noble, something good, something just, there
we find God.

- Oscar Romero

MOMENT IN TIME

CANADA APPOINTS ITS FIRST FEMALE SENATOR

Globe and Mail
February 15th, 2018

Feb. 15, 1930: It was once the most exclusive male
club in Canada – until Cairine Wilson joined it. On this
day in 1930, Wilson was appointed by then-prime
minister William Lyon Mackenzie King as the country's
first female senator. Her elevation to the post came four
months after a landmark decision from the British Privy
Council, which ruled that women were indeed persons,
and therefore eligible to sit in the Senate of Canada.
Wilson wasn't the natural first choice for the Red
Chamber: the case that led to her appointment had
been hard-fought by five Alberta feminists, including
jurist Emily Murphy.

But King chose Wilson – a mother of eight, Liberal
organizer and daughter of Liberal senator Robert
Mackay – for the historic position. She proved her
independence, consistently taking progressive positions
on subjects ranging from divorce to women's education,
and later became known for helping European refugees
flee the Nazis. In 1960, she was honoured with a marble
bust in the Senate antechamber. It was installed under
the bronze plaque that pays tribute to the Five Persons
from Alberta: the women who fought for her right to join
the club.

ST. DAVID'S SPIRITUAL TRAVELERS EVENT, 2017
South Africa was our destination! We planned a nineteen-
day tour that combined a focus on spirituality, social
justice, culture, and nature, and it ran October 21st
thru November 8th.

A beautiful brochure with trip cost, itinerary, and
many helpful travel hints was published.

http://tinyurl.com/hucsaf7

Twenty-five persons registered and paid in full to
take the trip. This was our tour group.

All together, thirty-two persons made deposits
but some had to withdraw for health or other
reasons.

We have activated a South Africa Spiritual Travelers
discussion list group to and used it to build community
amongst the participants, and to share news and
resources.

We reported our experiences to St. David's congregation
as a travel group reflection during the worship service Sunday,    January 14th, 2018. For information click Rostad Tours:

This marks the end of our South African travel project.

We will soon be asking people "Where do we travel next?"
