Dear Friends:

I am pleased to share a tribute, published this past week in the Anglican Journal online, to colleague Douglas John Hall of Montreal.

I consider him an important pioneer of Canadian theology. His work  continues to support me and many others today - Canadian or other.

Hopefully you will find my column helpful. I apologize for continuing to publish links to articles focused on the US president but I think it important that we keep current on what's being written about him - in Canada and beyond. Hopefully too, you find other Net Notes and Wisdom helpful as well.

Thanks for joining me again this week. Our winter programs at St. David's church are now under way.

Wayne

A few comments from Doug after reading the column online:

Montreal, QC.

Wayne -  you perform an important service for all of us, and for the larger church.

I consider What Christianity Is Not - An Exercise in Negative Theology, published only five years ago, as one of the best of my 24 published books...

I think we should (not soft-pedal the language and) come straight to terms with the end of Christendom. It is not an easy thing to face - as death never is. But unless it is faced, we will simply end with a whimper - which is exactly what we are in the process of doing!...

The "Reformation" that the church needs today is more like a Transformation - or a recovery of the pre-Constantinian prophetic, and apostolic Biblical tradition, which understood that there would likely only be a "few" and did not ask quantitative questions about disciple communities but asked what they were doing for the "many!"...

Again Wayne, thanks for your generous, affirming article (in the Anglican Journal) from Douglas John Hall who (in 2018) will have gone 20 years beyond the respectable Biblical age of 70!

Doug

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

--

That's all nonviolence is — organized love.

- Joan Baez

--

Be not simply good — be good for something.

- Henry Thoreau

--

The only way to survive is by taking care of one another.

- Grace Lee Boggs

--

Without being forgiven – released from the consequences
of what we have done – our capacity to act would, as it were,
be confined to a single deed from which we could never recover; we would remain the victims of its consequences forever.

- Hannah Arendt

--

If the world has not approached its end, it has reached a major
watershed in history, equal in importance to the turn from the
Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It will demand from us a spiritual  blaze; we shall have to rise to a new height of vision, to a new level of level where our physical nature will not be cursed as in the Middle Ages, but even more importantly, our spiritual being will not be trampled upon as in the Modern Era.

- Alexander Solzhenitsyn

CLOSING THOUGHT - Henry David Thoreau

ST. DAVID'S SPIRITUAL TRAVELERS EVENT, 2017
South Africa was our destination! We planned a nineteen-
day tour that combined a focus on spirituality, social
justice, culture, and nature, and it ran October 21st
thru November 8th.

A beautiful brochure with trip cost, itinerary, and
many helpful travel hints was published.

http://tinyurl.com/hucsaf7

Twenty-five persons registered and paid in full to
take the trip. This was our tour group.

All together, thirty-two persons made deposits
but some had to withdraw for health or other
reasons.

We have activated a South Africa Spiritual Travelers
discussion list group to and used it to build community
amongst the participants, and to share news and
resources.

We reported our experiences to St. David's congregation
as a travel group reflection during the worship service Sunday,    January 14th, 2018. For information click Rostad Tours:

This marks the end of our South African travel project.
