Welcome to Colleagues List for August 20th!

My Special Item this week is my August column appearing
this past week in the Anglican Journal. I discuss an issue
that concerns me a lot - how we handle memorial as well
as committal services today.

The other regular features appear as usual. Enjoy!

Wayne

PASTOR FREED FROM NORTH KOREA
CHEERED AT MISSISSAUGA CHURCH SERVICE

Globe and Mail,
August 14th, 2017

Rev. Hyeon Soo Lim, 62, was handed a sentence of life in prison with hard labour in December, 2015, by North Korea’s supreme court for what it called crimes against the state. On Wednesday, he was freed on “sick bail” after a Canadian delegation, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s national security adviser Daniel Jean, visited the country to press for his release. Waves of sobs and tears moved through the packed crowd at the ultramodern evangelical church in Mississauga, Ont., where Mr. Lim spoke at a service on Sunday afternoon in his first public statements since his release.

SHOULD WE TRAVEL TO NORTH KOREA?

Globe and  Mail,
August 16th, 2017

“Canada is in a unique position when it comes to North Korea. Despite being a combatant in the Korean War, Pyongyang does not view us in the same light as the United States. Like Mr. Lim, Canadians have been travelling to North Korea for the past twenty years and have saved lives and built capacity where the regime has failed to act. We cannot ignore the dangers of travelling to North Korea; but we cannot ignore the good that comes out of it as well. Pulling the plug when the North Korean people are still struggling to recover from a terrible famine that killed hundreds of thousands would not only be cruel, but would cut off one of the few avenues Canadians have to engage directly with the North Korean people.”

FOR DONALD TRUMP, THERE IS NO COMING BACK FROM THIS

Globe and Mail,
August 17th, 2017

“This is a man who has made a political career out of being disreputable and disruptive, yet
has always had the ability to recover from embarrassing gaffes and disturbing revelations. But not this time. It is henceforth impossible for the President to credibly condemn the racist and violent right-wing groups that were the only people responsible for provoking the violence in Charlottesville and for the death of a woman hit by a car driven into a crowd of peaceful counter-protesters.”

– The Globe and Mail editorial board

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

From Sojourners and the Bruderhof online:

We have seen advances in every aspect of our lives — except our humanity.

- Luma Mufleh

--

No one walks so safely as one who walks humbly and harmlessly with great love and great faith. For such a person gets through to the good in others (and there is good in everyone), and therefore cannot be harmed.

This works between individuals, it works between groups, and it would work between nations if nations had the courage to try it.

- Peace Pilgrim

--

I ask, “How have you all this wealth?” For the care of the poor consumes consumes wealth. When each one receives a little for one’s needs, and when all owners distribute their means simultaneously for the care of the needy, no one will possess more than one’s neighbor. Yet it is plain that you have very many lands. Whence all these?

Undoubtedly you have subordinated the relief and comfort of many to your convenience. And so, the more you abound in your riches, the more you want in love.

- Basil the Great

--

A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. It is our misfortune that for most of us that clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood. If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing antidote against the boredom and disenchantment of later years, the sterile preoccupation with things that are artificial, the alienation from the sources of our strength.

 - Rachel Carson

--

The New Testament, without going into details, gives us a pretty clear hint of what a fully Christian society would be like. Perhaps it gives us more than we can take. It tells us that there are to be no passengers or parasites: if we do not work, we ought not to eat. People are to work with their own hands, and what is more, everyone’s work is to produce something good: there will be no manufacture of silly luxuries and then of sillier advertisements to persuade us to buy them. And there is to be no “swank” or “side,” no putting on airs. To that extent a Christian society would be what we now call Leftist.

On the other hand, it is always insisting on obedience – obedience (and outward marks of  respect) from all of us to properly appointed magistrates, from children to parents, and (I am afraid this is going to be very unpopular) from wives to husbands. Thirdly, it is to be a cheerful society: full  of singing and rejoicing, and regarding worry or anxiety as wrong.

- C.S. Lewis

Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.

ST.DAVID'S SPIRITUAL TRAVELERS EVENT, 2017

South Africa has been chosen as our destination!
We plan a nineteen-day tour that combines a focus
on spirituality, social justice, culture, and nature,
and it will run October 21st thru November 8th.

A beautiful brochure with trip cost, itinerary, and
many helpful travel hints has been published.
http://tinyurl.com/hucsaf7

Our optimal group size for maximum trip meaning
and value is 28-29 persons.
To date, thirty-two

persons have made deposits to claim a special saving,
but some have had to withdraw.

WE ARE CLOSE TO REACHING OUR DEPARTURE GOAL.

YOU CAN STILL REGISTER. If we reach 29 deposits
you will be added to a waiting list and can still join

us in the event someone has to drop out.

We have activated a South Africa Spiritual Travelers
discussion list group to begin building community
amongst the participants, and to share news and
resources.

We hope to name a tour reporter who will report
back home each day's activities so everyone can
enjoy the experience, if not directly, then indirectly.

Three months from now we leave for South Africa!
